Tom, (director and the head of production for the play), suggested we could help him with some ideas for the chorus seating, suitable for around 30 members. Starting with the focus of the ring in the centre with hanging curtains, he stated that it was important the set didn't fully obscure the members of the chorus.
Therefore we decided to incorporate the curtain ring into the stage entrance, allowing actors to enter directly through the ring; thus adding gravitas to a character's entrance through the curtains.
The chorus will sit either side; sitting or standing (relative to the required dramatic effect as decided by the director), but their podiums will mirror those of the audience - staggered seating escalating at the same heights as the audience's seating.
This will create a sense of unity between the audience and chorus - as though the audience is an extension of the chorus, though without lines and scripted involvement in the play - their shared positions opposite the central character area will aid a sense of shared involvement in the story.
The result is a sense of two audiences opposite the main set area - though one is the chorus, and is scripted into the performance.
